I hate microsoft points too! But I think the reason for them has more to do with the localization of the Xbox Live Dashboard than some shady point shaving. It’s easier to develop for and support an application that uses a single currency (microsoft points in the case of the dashboard) than one that supports the actual currencies for every country the application is used.

So for example the dashboard says the cost of the item is 1200 points everywhere.. instead of $15.00 US or ¥ 1150.20 japanese yen or whatever country needs to be displayed.
